You want to write a killer post. You want to generate heaps of engagement. And you want a massive amount of shares on social media. Yet all you can hear are crickets… No engagement, no shares, a complete lack of excitement. Very sad face. You definitely want to avoid this situation. One of the ways to do that is to choose the right blog topic. Let’s explore how to do that.

It starts with an idea

Every blog starts with an idea. Sometimes, it doesn’t even have to be a very good idea. Regardless of the strength of the idea, you will need to put some work into fleshing it out to avoid those crickets!

Start by jotting down ideas for blogs as they come to you. Either keep a notebook handy, a document saved on your computer, or a note on your phone. Write any idea down, you never know when you might come back to it. You will then have a list of ideas to draw from when the time comes to write.

Once you have selected an idea from your list start with some brainstorming. Look at possible points you could cover in the article, what your objective is and what you might title it. During this process you will flesh out your idea into an actual post and come up with a loose structure. You may even spawn some side ideas that you can turn into follow up posts later. Make sure you add them to your ideas list for future reference.

5 Tips to Choose the Right Blog Topic

1: One Topic Per Post: By focusing on just one topic you can ensure your blog post will be well ordered and meaningful. If you have connected topics that you want to write on, then turn it into a blog series so that you can dedicate time to each topic individually. If you create a series, it will also have people returning to your site to read the next installment.

2: Write on Something Topical: If there is a big hype about a particular subject, and you can write a blog post that relates to both the topic and your business, then capitalise! Make sure the connection is relevant though or the writing will seemed forced.

3: Go to your FAQs: If you have a question that your readers always ask you, then write a blog post on it. It won’t stop them asking the question, but clearly it is a pain for them. You know it will be of interest to your readers, so it should get great engagement.

4: Write on an existing topic with your own spin: If there is a common topic in your field that everyone writes on, don’t just regurgitate what others have already written. Write about your personal take on the topic, put your own spin on it. If it’s such a common topic, you know people will want to read about it!

5: Write about what matters to you: Write on something you are passionate about. Your passion will show through in your writing and you will transport your readers with you. They will be able to relate with you and you will grow trust in your relationship with them.

There are so many topics that you could choose to write on. Just remember that the first one that comes to mind is not always the best one. Check your idea file and write on the topic that resonates with you that day. If you enjoy writing it then it will show in your writing. If it becomes a chore to write it, then it will become a chore for your audience to read!
